a.. управление, включая развитие демократии и гражданского общества;
b.. роль США в мире и вопросы партнерства и лидерства;

Editor’s Note

Welcome to another edition of The Big IDEA. Thanks, first of all, to everyone who contributed and just a reminder that we’re always on the lookout for news and articles, so feel free to get in touch with any suggestions.

Thanks, as always, to Manos Moschopoulos for making everything work.

In one development since the last edition, Dr. Ian Duncan has become another member of the Editorial Board. Dr. Duncan is no stranger to debate as a former WUDC finalist and his enormous experience in public life, including his current role as Head of the Office of the Scottish Parliament in Brussels, will prove a great addition to our work.

IDEA Youth Forum 2011

The 2011 IDEA Youth Forum is a two-week summer debate event for high school students and their coaches, which will take place from July 19 to August 1, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey. The event is jointly organized by IDEA and Doga Colleges. IDEA’s very own Hanneke explains what everyone will be doing when the debating is over.

After a busy day of debating at the Youth Forum, you’ll probably want to relax and get to know each other in a more relaxed setting. That’s where the evening program comes in. Carefully designed to combine meeting new friends, displaying your talents besides debating and discovering some of Istanbul’s highlights, the social program is an integral part of the Youth Forum. Some activities take place every year, others are new but all are intended to make the event even more enjoyable. Even at this early stage, a tentative schedule of this year’s social activities is already up on our website. So check it out today and see what we’ve got in store for you.

Don’t forget that registration will close at the end of this month. Well over a hundred people have already claimed their spot, but there are still some spaces left. Be sure to register in time, and to complete the registration form in full, in order to go through the selection process, which begins on May 1. The registration form can be found on our website. Please note that you can also apply for financial aid through this form if you register before the April 30 deadline. Good luck with the registration.

Scholarships offered for the China Advocacy Institute

The China Advocacy Institute studies the issues surround the notion of sustainability through real world situations. It, simultaneously, provides students with the skills to advocate in favor of a more sustainable approach. IDEA took a look at how this initiative works:

The Advocacy Institute: Sustainability is an innovative course of lectures, discussions, debates, field trips and interactive activities around the theme of sustainability. Limited to just 45 students, the institute's goal is to equip students from around the world with a deeper understanding of sustainability and provide the tools necessary for advocacy. Four professors from Willamette University and two professors from Dalian Nationalities University teach the course.

The aim is to provide the tools needed to advocate for sustainability using an inter-disciplinary course set in Dalian, China that enrolls university students from China, the US, and other countries around the world. The institute's goal is to equip students with a deeper understanding of sustainability and provide the tools necessary for advocacy. This diverse course includes lectures, discussions, debates, media analysis and field trips to relevant sites.

This year, students will explore sustainability through two case studies of environmental disaster: the 2010 oil spills in Dalian, China and the Gulf of Mexico. Through lectures and discussion, instructors will guide students in analyzing how an oil spill impacts the environment and local livelihoods. The course will examine government and corporate responses to each of the two oil spills. As an interactive extension of course materials, Professor Robert Trapp will teach students to debate the issues formally. A professor of Graphic Arts from Dalian Nationalities University will exhibit his photographs of the Dalian oil spill and guide students on a tour of the site.

Bratislava Schools Debating Competition

Debate teams from eight countries met last weekend for the Bratislava Schools Debating Competition. The chief adjudicator of the tournament was Beth James from Wales, who is also chief adjudicator for the upcoming World Schools Debating Championship. The competition was won by one of the teams of the Anglo-Chinese Junior College of Singapore, who beat Slovakia in the final.

There were two prepared motions at the tournament, with each team arguing both sides of both motions: "This house believes that developed countries have a moral obligation to open their borders to immigrants from developing countries", and "This house believes that every state should have the right to prosecute any individual for crimes against humanity committed anywhere in the world." Impromptu motions included "This house would tolerate the public use of politically incorrect language" and "This house would make junk food companies pay compensation to individuals."

Bratislava Schools Debating Competition is hoping to become an annual event held by the Slovak Debate Association. Mark your calendars - preparations for the April 2012 have already begun.
